How can I enroll?

Register in writing in good time (at least 1 day before the first class day) via the online registration form on our website. Classes can sometimes fill up and participation may no longer be possible, so be on time! The order of arrival of registrations with payment of the course fee determines placement. You can register online via our website or during class, the Open Day, or our monthly salsa party. Your registration is only valid when payment has been received.

Question 2

How can I cancel my registration?

Cancellation of your registration must be done in writing via email and is possible up to 1 week before the first class day. In case of later cancellation, the full course fee is due. We must be strict about this because if you don't cancel or cancel too late, another couple/participant may be unnecessarily excluded from participation and/or the male-female balance is no longer correct.

How can I pay?

For courses you can register online via cubania.nl and pay directly with iDEAL (if you don't pay directly your registration will automatically expire), or you can register with a form during classes and pay directly in cash. For bootcamps and workshops the same options are available, sometimes only cash payment is possible. For other payments you can consult with us: transfer to NL13INGB0006404211 in the name of Cubania or cash. Note: the moment of registration and payment can determine the price - the earlier you pay, the cheaper it can be.

Question 4

What do the different levels entail?

There are 4 levels plus specializations. Nivel 1 (Beginners): for students with no or little experience, focus on basic steps, turns and body movement. Nivel 2 (Intermediate): for those who have completed at least Nivel 1 (10-24 hours of lessons), repetition of basics plus various salsa figures. Nivel 3 (Semi-Advanced): for those who have completed Nivel 2 at least twice and fully master the basics, complex figures with attention to lady-styling and musicality. Nivel 4 (Advanced): for very experienced dancers who have completed Nivel 3 at least 3 times, very complex figures, musicality, styling and body-control. In addition, we offer Rueda de Casino and Lady-Styling as specialization courses.

Question 5

Do I need to register with a dance partner?

Accepted Answer

No, this is not mandatory! About half of our students come without a lesson partner. However, we do advise registering with a lesson partner, because: couples have priority when a group fills up, in case of an imbalanced male-female ratio solo participants are assigned in order of registration, and when progressing to a higher level you may face the same waiting list again. If you come without a lesson partner, we try to match you with a permanent lesson partner. If you ultimately cannot participate because there is no lesson partner, you will get your lesson fee refunded.

Question 6

Do I have to switch dance partners during class?

Accepted Answer

Yes, that's the intention. This is good for your dance development: by dancing with different partners you work better on your technique and prevent becoming too attuned to one partner. When someone is absent, no one stands alone for long because we switch. Moreover, salsa is a social dance - in Cuba everyone dances with everyone! If you strongly object to this, please inform the teacher before the start of the class.

Question 7

What kind of clothing and shoes should I wear?

Clothing: Wear comfortable, breathable clothing. Sportswear can be pleasant but is not necessary. If you perspire a lot, bring an extra shirt. Shoes: Wear comfortable shoes. In higher levels, dance shoes with a suede sole are pleasant for turning, but for beginners this is not necessary. For ladies at lower levels, we advise against wearing high heels due to balance and the smooth floor.

If there are too many registrations, how are places assigned?

Accepted Answer

When a group is full, we assign available spots based on: 1) Couples have priority over solo registrations. 2) Students registered for one course have priority over students with multiple registrations who already have a spot. 3) The moment of payment. If we ultimately don't have a spot, we'll let you know as soon as possible and you'll get your course fee refunded.

Question 9

The course has already started. Can I still join?

Sometimes it's possible to join later, especially for new students who haven't danced with us before. Whether you can join depends on available spots and your dance level. It's important that you haven't missed too many lessons so you can keep up well. Contact us to discuss the possibilities.

Question 10

How often per year and when do courses start?

Accepted Answer

Regular courses start three times a year, preceded by an Open Day. Winter course: Open Day mid/late January, starts late January, duration ±12 weeks (free during Carnival). Spring course: Open Day around King's Day, starts late April/early May, duration ±9 weeks. Fall course: Open Day in September, starts September, duration ±13 weeks (free during fall break). Note: exact dates, duration and lesson-free periods may vary and are stated on our website.

Question 11

Can I take a trial lesson?

Yes! There are several options: During our Open Day we offer free trial lessons for Nivel 1, 2 and sometimes 3. Sometimes we organize a beginners workshop before our monthly parties. You can also take the first lesson of the course as a trial lesson for €15 p.p. (will be credited if you follow the rest of the course). Always contact us first to check availability, especially if you're coming without a dance partner.

Can I make up a missed lesson?

This is done in consultation with your lesson partner. If there are lessons at your level multiple times per week, you can in principle make up the lesson on another day, provided there is space. It's not possible to make up missed lessons during another course block, unless there is a demonstrable medical reason. It's never possible to get money back for missed lessons.

Can I take the same level multiple times?

Absolutely, that's even the intention! (exception is Nivel 1, which is usually taken 1-2 times). The figures are different each course, so you never have to be bored. Everyone can take the course multiple times within a level at their own pace. In consultation with the teacher, it's determined when you're ready to progress to the next level.

Can I get private lessons?

Yes, it's always possible to take private lessons. This can be useful if you're not sure which level to join, if you want to brush up, or if you want to learn to dance for example for a vacation to Cuba. The costs depend on the number of hours and location.

Question 15

I have experience with another salsa style. Which level can I do?

Accepted Answer

With extensive experience in another salsa style and mastery of the Cuban basics, you may possibly join Nivel 3, possibly in combination with Nivel 2. Without experience with Cuban basics, we advise Nivel 1. For experienced partner dancers (e.g. ballroom), Nivel 1 may be too simple - in that case we advise Nivel 1 and 2 simultaneously (with discount for two courses). Not sure? Feel free to contact us.

Question 16

I don't speak Dutch, can I take classes?

Our salsa lessons are taught in Dutch, but the teacher and dance-assistants speak English well. Crucial information is explained in both Dutch and English, and we're happy to answer questions in English during class. By watching the teacher carefully, it's generally no problem to learn the movements. Please inform the teacher before the start of the class.

No hablo holandés, ¿puedo tomar clases?

¡Sí! El profesor habla español. Las clases se imparten en holandés, pero la información importante se explica también en español si es necesario. No dudes en informar al profesor antes del inicio de la clase.

Do you also teach at other locations?

We currently teach Cuban Salsa lessons in The Hague (Tuesday and Friday) and Den Bosch (Monday, Wednesday and Thursday).

Where can I find music to practice?

You can ask the teacher during class for artist names and titles. Some songs we use: Bongo (Willy Chirino), El reloj de Pastora (Sierra Maestra), Confio en ti (Paulo FG), Vente negra (Habana con kola), La moda (Los Van Van), Havana City (Los Van Van), Chiquita (Manolito y su Trabuco). I want to go on vacation to Cuba and take salsa lessons there.

Question 22

What is Rueda de Casino?

Accepted Answer

Rueda de Casino is a Cuban group dance where different couples dance in a circle. The group leader determines which dance figures are performed through commands. During the dance, the ladies are regularly passed on to another gentleman. Participation in a Rueda de Casino course is only possible for Semi-Advanced and Advanced students.

What kind of lessons do you teach?

We teach group lessons in Salsa Cubana at various levels: Beginners, Intermediate, Semi-Advanced and Advanced. In addition, we regularly organize Lady-Styling and Rueda de Casino courses. We exclusively teach Cuban Salsa and no other Latin American dances.

You can find the General Terms and Conditions on our website. The main points: Registration at least one day before the first course day, couples have priority. Payment before the start of the 1st lesson via iDEAL or cash. Cancellation is possible up to one week before the first course day, after that the full course fee is due. For missed lessons, we look at whether making up within the same course block is possible, no discount is given for missed lessons.
