Your first salsa class: everything you need to know
Taking your first step onto the dance floor can feel like jumping into the deep end. But here's a secret: every dancer you admire started exactly where you are now.
What to expect at your first class?
At Cubania, beginner classes are designed to make you feel comfortable from minute one. You don't need:
- Previous experience β literally zero
- A dance partner β we rotate constantly, so you'll meet everyone in the group
- Special clothing β just comfortable shoes with a smooth sole (avoid trainers with heavy grip)
The first steps: the salsa basic
The basic salsa step counts 8 beats, but you only step on 6. Beats 4 and 8 are pauses. It sounds complicated, but your body gets it faster than your brain.
Basic count
| Beat | Foot | Direction |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Left | Forward |
| 2 | Right | In place |
| 3 | Left | Close |
| 4 | β | Pause |
| 5 | Right | Back |
| 6 | Left | In place |
| 7 | Right | Close |
| 8 | β | Pause |
Dance floor etiquette
A few unwritten rules that will serve you well:
- Smile β it's social dancing, not an exam
- Mind your hygiene β bring a small towel and extra deodorant
- Don't teach on the dance floor β leave that to the instructors
- Say "thank you" after every song β it's tradition
What if I have two left feet?
That's not a real thing. Coordination is trained, not something you're born with. After 4-6 classes, the basic steps become automatic and you'll start truly enjoying it.
